SHOP ! for FAIRTRADE Fresh Fruit
Fresh Fruit
The major supermarkets Tesco, Sainsbury, Asda, Morrisons, Co-op
are all capable of selling Fairtrade fresh fruit, and the best range is offered by Sainsbury's
(see
FT Foundation).
However, the ranges on offer are very variable and unrelieable.
This will only change if customers demand the Fairtrade labelled products.
The stores have some influence over what is offered in-store, so it is always worth speaking to the duty manager.
The convenience stores offer little Fairtrade produce, the only reliable product is bananas in Sainsbury's.
If you shop "locally" for Fairtrade fresh produce, disappointment is the order of the day.
Apples
Apples are available with the Fairtrade label.
(So far) only Asda has stocked Fairtrade labelled apples.
Mainstream apples are bland and boring, you are better buying locally grown (lower carbon footprint)
apples, with better flavour and texture, amd support the preservation of a diversity of produce).
Bananas
Fair Trade Bananas are now widely available.
Best of thje bunch: Sainsburys (all Sainsbury's are Fairtrade).
Grapes
The availability of Fairtrade grapes is variable (possibly seasonal).
Grapes are (in theory) available from Co-op Shops, and major supermarkets.
Lemons
Fairtrade lemons appear spasmodically in Co-op Shops, and major supermarkets.
Mango
Fairtrade mangoes are seasonally available from the major supermarkets.
Oranges
Fairtrade oranges are now available from major supermarkets.
Fresh Pineapple
Fairtrade fresh pineapples (when in season) are available from Co-op shops, and other major supermarkets.
